A quiet meeting of restless water and enduring cliffs.

In Edge of the Tide, a dramatic coastline unfolds beneath a softly clouded sky. Tall, weathered cliffs rise along the shore, their rugged faces catching subtle variations of light as the land gradually recedes towards the distant horizon.

The painting is built around the contrast between the movement of the sea and the permanence of the cliffs. Waves travel across the shoreline in layered washes of cool grey, blue and white, while the dark wet sand holds reflections of the changing sky.

The cliffs form a powerful vertical presence within the composition. Their weathered surfaces, broken edges and deep shadows suggest the effects of time and the persistent force of the sea. In contrast, the broad expanse of water and sky creates a feeling of openness and space.

The restrained palette of cool greys, muted blues and soft earth tones gives the scene a calm, contemplative character. The sweeping shoreline draws the eye gradually towards the distant coast, creating a sense of quiet movement through the painting.

The painting is an exploration of tides, time and the meeting of opposing forces — the constant movement of the sea against the enduring presence of the land.
